Obtaining B.Eng. in 1979, M.Sc. in 1981 and D.Eng. in 1990 from Kyoto University, Dr. Kaoru Takara has been working for Gifu University as Assoc. Prof., and Kyoto University Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) as Assoc. Prof. and as Professor since 1998, and moved to the Graduate School of Advanced integrated studies in Human Survivability Studies (GSAIS) as Professor since 2018. He also served as Assistant to Executive Vice-President, Deputy Executive Director, Director of DPRI (2015-2017) and Dean of GSAIS (2017-present).
Prof. Takara is specialized in hydrology, extreme-value statistics, and disaster prevention technology and policy research. In Kyoto University Engineering School, he has produced 48 doctors (including 35 international students from 13 countries). He received several academic awards such as Best Paper Award two times from Japan Society for Civil Engineers (JSCE) and Excellent Publication Award from Japan Association for Human and Environmental Symbiosis (JAHES).
Currently Prof. Takara is serving as Associate Member of the Science council of Japan, President of Japan Society for natural Disaster Science, President of Japan Society of Hydrology and Water Resources, and Research Supervisor of SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) coordinated by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
